Belts and Hoses

There are numerous moving parts and systems at work in your vehicle, and each depends on either belts, hoses, or both to help them work as they should.

The Types of Belts

There are three. The first is the timing belt, which is the notched belt that helps turn the engine camshaft and ensures that your valves and pistons pump in sync. When it goes bad, your engine will stop running. Newer models may be equipped with a longer-lasting timing chain instead of a timing belt, though.

Your vehicle also has both serpentine and drive belts. Serpentine belts team with the tensioner, idler pulley, and crank pulley to move such parts as your alternator and power steering. Drive belts run off the crank pulley and help operate the water pump, among other parts. If either a serpentine or drive belt fails, you typically have some time to address the issue before things get worse.

What Hoses Do

Hoses route fluids to and from parts such as your radiator, engine, and fuel tank. In general, if a part needs lubricating or cooling, it has hoses connected.

How to Detect Belt or Hose Problems

Unfortunately, belts and hoses can fail. Signs of this include:

  • Overly loose or slack belts
  • Belts that are too tight to operate
  • Frayed belt edges
  • Cracks in the hoses
  • Large pools of liquid under your vehicle
