There are two types of automotive brake systems: drum brakes and disc brakes. They both feature master brake cylinders, brake piston(s), brake hoses, and brake lines. Where they differ is when it comes to the parts that respond to your applying pressure to the brake pedal.
The Differences Between the Two Brake Systems
With a drum brake system, the master brake cylinder responds by sending hydraulic brake fluid to fasten a brake shoe and brake drum together to create the friction needed to slow the rotation of your wheels.
In a disc brake system, the fluid causes the brake calipers to clamp brake pads onto the brake rotors and produce that resistance.
