The factory exhaust system in your car, SUV, van, or pickup safely removes any byproducts produced as your engine burns fuel while allowing cleaner gases to enter the atmosphere. In addition to keeping you and your passengers free from noxious fumes, it's also better for the environment at large.

How an Exhaust System Works

To start, the pollutants go through the catalytic converter. At that point metals like rhodium, platinum, and palladium collect and contain the toxic molecules as they travel. Then the molecules get separated into oxygen and nitrogen. Nitrogen gets trapped, while the oxygen continues on its way as the hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide are consumed. What's left? Water vapors and carbon dioxide.

Your exhaust manifold gathers the gases and sends them through the exhaust pipe. As that's happening, the muffler and resonator reduce engine noise and ensure that air flows as best it can. Finally, the tail pipe releases the cleaner fumes into the air.

Recognize the Signs of Exhaust System Problems

Eventually, even the best exhaust system can begin to go bad. That can lead to significant engine trouble. Symptoms include:

  • A drop in fuel economy
  • Odd noises coming from the muffler and exhaust pipe
  • The smell of rotten eggs in the air
  • Your "Check Engine" dashboard light comes on
