Spark Plugs
Your spark plugs are responsible for igniting the mix of air and fuel inside your engine, in a process that's known as "spark ignition." Without it, your car, SUV, pickup, or van isn't going anywhere.
How Spark Plugs Work
When you ither turn the key in the ignition lock cylinder or press the "Start" button, the ignition switch activates. That causes the battery, starter motor, starter solenoid, and ignition coil to work together to produce a small charge that the plugs capture in their leads. The leads fire that charge across a precisely measured gap, creating the spark that leads to combustion.
Unfortunately, spark plugs can fail. Either they get corroded, or perhaps the gap between leads has grown too wide to produce an effective spark. That's not good.
Learn the Signs of Bad Spark Plugs
Don’t make the mistake others do of automatically assuming that the alternator is to blame for any issues. If you experience any of the following symptoms, check the condition of your spark plugs first:
- The engine starts misfiring
- Problems starting your vehicle
- Rougher than usual engine idle
- The "Check Engine" dashboard light turns on
